Luca was a recently premiered Pixar film that came out on Disney+. This film was directed by Enrico Casarosa and starred Jacob Tremblay, Jack Dylan Grazer, and more. In all honesty, this movie was decent, I would neither that it was too good nor too bad, it was mediocre. The animation and sound of the movie were lovely, but the story and the plot of it could have been better.

Moreover, this movie was about a Sea Monster named Luca who lived with his family and then he meets another sea monster named Alberto who takes Luca outside the water and when they dry up, they become human; and the story after that portrays their ventures into an Italian riviera in an attempt to win a Vespa in a Vespa competition, in which they succeed, of course, because it’s a Pixar’s movie for God’s sake.

This movie had amazing aesthetics, the sound quality and the portrayal was simply great in my opinion. The animation was smooth, the characters were rendered well, the colours were pleasing to look at and were used in a wide range which can be seen through the beautiful looking scales of the sea monsters, and even the audio of this movie was amazing such as the Italian music and the clarity and quality of the voices. This movie also had many valuable lessons for children such as you shouldn’t hide your identity and be yourself. Overall, this movie was wholesome and decent.

In this movie, everything was pretty good except for the main element which was the story. I understand what they were trying to convey to the audience but it just wasn’t implemented correctly, because so many things took place in the movie which wasn’t explained properly such as, what does Luca do in under the water and what life in there, how can you become a human when you are dry, and without a sort of backstory we couldn’t connect with the character which kept the audience sort of unhooked.

In addition, the weirdest part of all is that, when Luca suddenly became a human outside water, they made it look like it was all normal, I mean they are changing the anatomical structure of a creature and it’s all okay to them. I find that just simply preposterous because they had no backstory or explanation behind that either. The story’s main conflict was small considering that it was winning a Vespa race but even though we have seen Pixar make flawless movies with small problems, in my opinion, this just wasn’t one. Overall, the movie just needs some more meaning to it.

Moreover, I think many of the characters in this movie also need to be worked on. Take the parents of Luca for example, they are also sea monsters looking for Luca on the upper world and the only way they think of is to splash little kids on the streets with water and considering that they are trying to keep a low profile, splashing kids with water and throwing them in water can be considered as an assault of some kind, and doing that will surely raise suspicion from the law.

As well as the villain. I don’t know if it's just me but lately, many new villains in the animated movie haven’t been good due to some common reasons such as a lack of attention on them and giving them pointless and stupid goals/dialogues.

In conclusion, this movie was an aesthetically pleasing and beautiful movie with many problems laying in the story and character development, it was aimless, and the biggest problem laid with the creation of no back story for the characters. I think that if it had a backstory that explains the creatures and showing their day-to-day life, a connection could have occurred and made a better movie overall. Due to those reasons, I would give it a 6.5/10.
