Free Guy

Free Guy came out in October on Disney+ when I saw it. It is directed by Shawn Levy, whom you may know from the Night at the Museum series, Real Steel and the upcoming Uncharted: Drake's Fortune starring Tom Holland. This movie starred Ryan Reynolds as Guy, Jodie Comer as Millie or MolotovGirl, Joe Kerry as Keys and Taika Watiti as the antagonist, Antwan. It is an Action and Sci-Fi movie, rated PG-13.

In this movie, Guy is an NPC (Non-Player Character) in an online multiplayer game called Free City. He breaks the NPC algorithm and starts acting like an actual player. After that Guy meets MolotovGirl, AKA Millie, who is one of the Co-Founders of the game, and with the help of Keys, who is the other Co-Founder of Free City. They fight together to save the first actual living AI (Guy) against Antwan, the CEO of Soonami Studios. Antwan wants to delete the game and release Free City 2.

The movie uses a complex and tricky formula for the storyline, which is extremely easy to mess up. One wrong move and everything goes sideways, which has happened with many movies using this similar formula. However, Free Guy perfectly stuck the landing to convey the message and keep the audience hooked.

The actors had good chemistry, which gave us a better sense of the 2 sides and their motives. Millie had good chemistry with keys in the real world and Guy in the game as MolotovGirl. These character to character connections allowed the movie's plot to run smoothly.

Moreover, the movie's representation of an online multiplayer was something that I loved to see as it was on point. The director nailed the elements of a multiplayer open-world game. With features such as tea-bagging after killing someone, mass murders of NPCs, player interactions, etc.

Furthermore, the cameos of the popular streamers coming up and talking about the game were fun to watch. It was a realistic representation of how the gaming community reacts to popular games like these, the changes and the events regarding the game, etc. It was one thing I could relate to as I am somewhat of a gamer myself. In addition, the representation of elements from other sci-fi movies gave a nice touch, such as Hulk's arm, the Lightsaber and Captain America's shield.

However, the antagonist of this movie, Antwan AKA Taika Watiti, like most new movies, was somewhat 'lame.' Taika Watiti's acting was too exaggerated. Antwan tried to talk, walk and live like a modern douchebag, and that acting seemed too forced and his actions and things he tried to convey was too... 'cringe' and overall not too good.

To conclude, this movie had an original and brilliantly executed story, pleasing aesthetics like the gaming graphics, strong character to character and character to audience connections and moderately fine acting. Overall, I liked the movie a lot and would give it a solid 8/10.
